To explain hypnotherapy, you first must understand the concept of the conscious and unconscious mind.
A good way of understanding the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind is the iceberg metaphor.
As an iceberg floats in the water, the huge mass of it remains below the surface. Only a small part of the whole iceberg is visible above the surface. In this way, the iceberg is like the mind.
The conscious mind is what we notice above the surface while the unconscious mind, the largest and most powerful part, remains unseen below the surface.
In our metaphor the small amount of iceberg above the surface represents the conscious mind; the huge mass below the surface, the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind holds all awareness that is not presently in the conscious mind. All memories, feelings and thoughts that are out of conscious awareness are by definition ‘unconscious.’ It is also called the subconscious and is known as the dreaming mind or deep mind.
The conscious mind (the “aware” mind) focusses and directs your attention at will toward tasks. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your view, the conscious mind also tends to wander, question and analyse information, it’s your logical mind. This is a good thing in that it protects you from accepting and believing everything you are told. The down side is that it also slows down the learning and development process.
Children from birth to around 6 or 7 years of age are in a unconscious state of learning, hence they absorb information and learn advanced motor skills like standing, walking and running, they learn language and social skills at incredible speed.
The unconscious mind (the mind that is out of your awareness) is the jewel of your existence, it stores all your experiences from birth till now. It regulates your breathing, body temperature, heart rate, digestion and nervous system to name a few. All that you have learned from birth till now is within the unconscious mind.
Hypnosis is a tool which allows you to access the unconscious mind. With the help of a trained and qualified Hypnotherapist, you can make changes faster and easier than you ever imagined
